Services

We are always happy to talk to disabled people, carers & their families about their needs. We will adapt our services where ever we can.

The Aim of the Service:

To enable disabled people, carers & their families towards independency. To provide a resource and a focal point where their views & needs can be voiced.

To provide support, advice & information that is sensitive to culture, faith & language needs, for disabled people from ethnic minority communities & to families & carers of disabled adults, & to offer life enhancing opportunities for educational, social & leisure activities for this client group.

The Objectives of the Services would be to provide:

• Delivery of high quality, culturally sensitive, multilingual service for disabled people, carers & their families through the provision of information & advice, Advocacy & Support, Training & Education, Leisure & Social activities.

• Multi-lingual advice for service users on benefits, housing, social, health & education services, by means of direct information, help with completing forms & applications, & advice on where to seek more information, by working in partnership with other VCFS & Mainstream agencies for outcomes required.

• A translation service, available to all users on request, to assist with letters, official communications & to accompany service users on appointments to clinics, hospitals & offices where this is needed because of language barriers. This service is available to disabled people, carers & their families.

• Tuition in ESOL, basic literacy & numeracy & information technology to improve basic life skills, & improve employability.

• Advocative support to enable service users to successfully liaise with statutory organisations.

• Opportunities for both male & female disabled users & their carers to meet together for mutual support, with the added resources of an Outreach facility, to assist with any barriers with regards to accessing mainstream services.

• Social & leisure provision for disabled adults, carers & their families, & support for them to access local community services.

• Liaison with statutory & voluntary service providers & advice on appropriate provision to meet cultural & religious requirements.

• An administrative system that notes the numbers and range of requests, the response from the service, & where the major service deficit arrears exist, in order both to act as a mechanism for monitoring the quality of service provided, & to ensure that needs are made known to the relevant other service providers, stakeholders & funders, in order to address the gaps in provision and work towards fulfilling these.

The Outcome of the Service:

Disabled service users, carers & their families from the ethnic minority communities will become empowered through the support and services provided by Pukar. Pukar will provide a link between the client group and local mainstream agencies & service providers to enable successful & efficient accessibility of services & educate & raise awareness to these organisations with regards to concerns & barriers surrounding such a vulnerable group of people. Pukar will offer a diverse yet united, non-judgemental and holistic atmosphere, thus creating a platform & promoting social inclusion and community cohesion.
